There are moments in history – and in our personal lives – when the only faithful response is to stop nodding along and speak the truth. To refuse to lie by silence or omission. To call evil what it is, even when culture tells us to celebrate it.
I’ve been sitting with the heaviness of recent events – the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the tragedies that continue to shake our world, and the reality of living in a culture where disagreement can be met with violence.
Regardless of what you thought about him politically, Charlie was someone walking in his calling. And his death is a sobering reminder: we don’t have time to sit on the sidelines wishing God would give us more clarity. There’s work to do. There’s a Kingdom to build.
As Father Dwight Longenecker once said: “First we overlook evil, then we permit evil, then we legalize evil, then we promote evil, then we celebrate evil—and then we persecute those who still call it evil.”
This is the reality we’re living in. And yet, God’s Word gives us both wisdom and urgency:
“Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” – Ephesians 5:15–16
So here’s my question for you: are you making the most of your opportunities?
Sometimes we get stuck waiting for a miraculous moment of clarity – like a neon sign in the sky telling us what to do. But most of the time, God is simply asking us to do something today.
Calling isn’t always flashy or dramatic. For many, it looks like the “silent callings” of Matthew 25 – The Parable of the Talents. The Master gave no instructions, just entrusted his servants with resources and expected them to multiply. The ones who acted were commended. The one who buried what he had was condemned for doing nothing.
Your calling is not to bury your gifts! It’s to be fruitful and multiply – to take what God has given you and put it to work in service of His Kingdom.
If I’m honest, I’ve often been tempted to keep quiet. Living in a city with values far from my own, it feels easier to just nod and smile rather than risk standing out. But silence is its own form of lying. And the truth is, evil expands with avoidance – but it shrinks back when God’s people choose to stand and speak.
Revelation 12:11 reminds us of how believers overcome: “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”
That’s sobering. But it’s also freeing. Our testimonies matter. Speaking truth matters. We don’t defend God – He defends Himself. As Francis of Assisi once said, “Truth is like a lion; you don’t have to defend it. Let it loose. It will defend itself.”
My grandfather, Colonel Gerald Kemp, used to tell his squadron during battle: “Complete your assignment.” Those three words have shaped me. They weren’t about knowing every detail of the mission ahead – they were about obeying the assignment you’ve already been given, even under fire.
Colossians 4:17 puts it just as plainly: “See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.”
Your assignment might look small today. It might feel ordinary. But the call is the same: do it faithfully, do it boldly, and do it today.
Because evil grows when we avoid it. But it shrinks back when we stand up, defend truth, and trust that God Himself will defend us.
Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” None of us know how many days we have left. Which means every one matters.
So let me leave you with this: Stop lying. Stop staying silent when it matters most. Speak truth in love. Live out your calling with courage. And whatever assignment God has placed in your hands – complete it.
