Most job seekers fall deep into the LinkedIn rabbit hole with 15 tabs open, rereading the same job description 3x, and somehow applying to only ONE job after 2 hours. Familiar story.
The truth is, most people spend way too much time reading job descriptions instead of applying to them. They overanalyze every bullet point, imagine what life might look like in that role, and convince themselves that one more reread will make things clearer. But it doesn’t, it just wastes time.
So here’s my advice: if the posting you’re reading fails on any of your top criteria, skip it. Don’t overthink it. There are bigger fish to fry.
In this blog post, I’ll walk you through the 5-step framework I use with clients to help them quickly and confidently decide which job descriptions are worth their time, and which ones to scroll right past.
Clarity is just so important, because here’s the hard truth: you can’t evaluate job descriptions effectively if you’re not clear on what you’re looking for! Before you even open LinkedIn, there are two non-negotiable prerequisites:
If you’re typing in “analyst,” you’ll drown in thousands of irrelevant postings, from cybersecurity to supply chain to marketing analytics. Narrow it down to what truly fits your skillset and goals.
This happened to our client once. He discovered that searching “Supply Chain Analyst” pulled up jobs that required coding, while he preferred Excel-based analysis. Once he switched his search to “Supply Planner” or “Demand Planner,” everything changed.
So be as specific as possible, and list out the few variations of your ideal title that mean the same thing. That specificity saves hours!
Once you’ve chosen your target role, study 5-10 job postings for that title:
Then, adjust your resume and LinkedIn to match those common denominators before you apply.
This step alone will cut your job-search fatigue in half because you won’t waste time wondering: Am I even qualified?
Once you’ve got your clarity and tools ready, it’s time to scroll smarter!
When you open a job post, your instinct might be to start reading from the top, but that’s where most people lose time. Instead, do a 15-second gut check first.
In that 15 seconds, look at just these five things:
If the posting fails on any of these, skip it immediately. Romanticizing every single word from the job description is a total waste of time, and it’s best to be efficient especially in job hunting where opportunities come and go!
If a posting passes the 15-second gut check, then and only then should you dive deeper, starting with the requirements section. Ask yourself:
If you don’t meet the minimums or the missing skills are non-negotiable, move on quickly. But, this topic is more nuanced as you don’t necessarily need 100% of the qualifications, but if the missing skills are critical, like needing a CPA license and you don’t have one, it’s time to skip and move on.
Now that you’ve found a posting that fits your target role and qualifications, it’s time to read your job responsibilities section, and this is where discernment comes in. Ask yourself:
We say this time and time again, but your day-to-day tasks are probably the most significant basis for your satisfaction and success in the position. Always be honest with yourself – this will save you time as well because some roles may look impressive on paper, but may drain your energy in practice.
With that said, keep an eye out for red flags, such as:
That said, not every “fast-paced” job is toxic. If the role’s responsibilities excite you and align with your goals, keep going. Otherwise, close the tab and move on!
At this point, you’ve likely found a genuine contender. Now’s the time to confirm 2 final things before applying:
This one’s easy to overlook when you’re tired of job hunting, but it matters more than you think. Avoid stepping into roles within sectors that are clearly contracting, like industries facing mass layoffs, automation risks, or shaky long-term demand.
Ask yourself, “Is this company a growing ship or a sinking one?”
You can usually spot the signs: companies expanding their teams, posting consistently on LinkedIn, or getting featured in positive press are good indicators.
On the flip side, multiple job listings for the same role, sudden leadership turnover, or a lack of online presence might signal instability. Remember, you’re not just applying for a job, you’re investing your time and skills into something that should move you forward, not backward.
Let’s be real: not every job posting is transparent about pay. But you can still get a solid ballpark. Check Glassdoor, Indeed, or Levels.fyi to compare the market range for your role, experience level, and location. If the company’s offer falls significantly below that range, it might be a red flag or a signal that the role’s scope is smaller than it appears.
On the other hand, if the salary seems unusually high, double-check the responsibilities and expectations, sometimes “dream pay” hides a nightmare workload.
The goal here isn’t to overthink, it’s to make sure your next move puts you on a healthy, sustainable trajectory. Once those two boxes are checked and everything looks aligned, it’s time to apply, fast.
